What is an oral board

An oral board is a panel interview, usually three to five people sitting across a table from you. They ask a set list of questions and score your answers numerically. Those scores are added up, and your total determines your position on the ranked list. Rank high enough and you get the apprenticeship offer. Rank low and you wait for the next opening, or you do not get one at all.

It is not a conversation. It is a test with a format. Most guys blow it not because they are unqualified, but because they have never rehearsed out loud under pressure.

How you are actually scored

01 Each answer gets a number, usually 1 to 10, from every panelist. The numbers are averaged.
02 They score specific things per question: clarity, structure, evidence, and whether you actually answered what was asked.
03 A rambling answer scores lower than a tight, structured one, even if both have the same facts.
04 Panelists write notes while you talk. Dead air and filler get marked. So does confidence without arrogance.
05 Your ranked-list position is the sum of those scores. One weak category can drop you out of the running.
